How a scan finds the right price
Every product has a barcode number (a UPC). We use it to line up the same item across stores, even when each store names it differently.
1. Scan
A barcode gives us the UPC right away. A photo or receipt line gets matched to the closest UPC.
2. Match
We find that UPC on store websites, in weekly flyers, on shopper receipts and on shelf photos.
3. Compare
One price per store, with when it was last seen and how sure we are. Cheapest shows first.
Receipts work too
“PBX WHL MLK GAL 3.49” on a Publix receipt becomes Publix Whole Milk, 1 gal, UPC 0 41483 03141. That price then shows up on the map for everyone nearby. (Example)
